The first impression you get from talking with the members of O-Positive, a Boston-based, close to big time band, is, in all actuality, positive. The five member group is comprised of extremely talented musicians, who for all their skills in music, are very loose, amiable and easy to talk to. Renowned for their powerful love songs, O-Positive is a band on the move. They have recently completed a two-week tour of the Eastern United States, and are looking to continue touring as much as possible. Unlike some bands, O-Positive is not an overly-serious gathering of nihilistic musicians. They are a band that likes to have fun, but in doing so, they dont detract from their musical style or substance; they add to it. O-Positive has struck a balance between comedy and charity, and the end result is a band that is one of the most engrossing, captivating bands of today. O-Positive began about seven years ago in the Boston area. All of the band members (Dave Herlihy, Dave Ingham, Dave Martin, Alex Lob, and Alan Petitti) grew up in and around Boston, specifically Newton and Watertown. We were all in some cover bands to start, says Alan Petitti, but I was getting sick of doing covers, and wanted to start writing my own material. So one day, Alex, Dave Ingham and I got together, jammed, and worked on some original stuff. That was really fun, and we decided to meet once a week to write new material. We made this a point, and I brought in Dave Herlihy, who was an acquaintance of mine. After awhile, he became a big part of what we were doing, and we decided to do a gig. The rest, as they say, is history. Encour- aged by the reaction they were getting, the four members (at the time) of O-Positive stuck with their intentions of originality. The O-Positive of today is made up of five very talented musicians. Dave Herlihy is on lead vocals, and also plays a mean guitar. Herlihy graduated from Watertown High School, and also passed the bar exam to obtain a law degree. Dave Ingham is O-Positives bassist, and also plays a part in the bands vocals. Dave Martin, a new addition to the original four member band and the last of the three Daves, plays guitar, and goes house on the tamborine for certain songs. Martin is also on O-Positives vocal crew. Alex Lob is the man in charge of hammering out a high-powered rhythm on the bands percussion section. Although he has a relatively quiet personality, once Lob hits the stage, hes sure to impress with his own unique style of play. Playing guitar, keyboards and the accordion for O-Positive, Alan Petitti rounds out the band. Petitti also contributes to the bands vocals. By varying playing styles and techniques from song to song, not to mention instruments, O-Positive comes off with a very unique sound, one that is not only hard to replicate, but difficult to develop as well. Upon posing the dreaded question (as seen by Dave Ingham), one can find out why the band decided to call themselves O-Positive. We didnt hate it, says Ingham right off the bat.We started thinking AWow, were not saying no to that, so it stuck, and just like any other name for any other band, it began to work for us. O-Positives first album was an EP that came out on a tiny label called Throbbing Lobster. Only Breathing was later compiled with another EP, Cloud Factory, which had come out on Links label. The Only Breathing/Cloud Factory compact disc came out on Links Label, and allowed O-Positive fans to enjoy such heart-wrenching tunes as Talk About Love and Up, Up, Up on the same album. Alan Petitti affirms the value of the CD by saying, It really was the release of the CD that made people stop and listen to us. Although college stations and WFNX had played our stuff, this CD put it all together, and was more attractive to the fans. When asked which song in particular could be credited with the groups success, Alex Lob doesnt hesitate to say, It was ATalk About Love. It has a real catchy tune that people can easily remember, and by remembering the song, they would also remember us. After Link put out the CD compilation in 1987, O-Positive switched labels and their new Toyboat, Toyboat, Toyboat came out that year on a major label, Epic Records. According to Dave Ingham, making the record with Epic was much easier than putting together Only Breathing or Cloud Factory, since, with the major label, the band actually had a recording budget, and were not pressed to squeeze all the recording studio time into as short a period as possible. One advantage of being with Epic is the number of opportunities that present themselves. O-Positive has already shot their first video for MTV, (Imagine That), and theyre hoping to get in some more videos off the new album. With a band just starting off in the Boston area, the members of O-Positive didnt really expect things to work out the way they did. For Petitti, I just wanted to be in a band considered good enough in Boston to get us gigs. However, the band members attitudes changed after the release of Only Breathing There came a point after the first record, that we all decided we were going to get a major label deal, maintains Ingham.Once we decided that, we just kept fighting towards that end. Youve got to. If you dont, then youre going to quit, because there are alot of points where morale is low, and quitting seems to be the easiest way out. To achieve the goal of becoming part of a major label, it is impossible to toy with the chemistry of a band. O-Positive has all of its original members plus one, so the original make-up of the band has not been changed. The days of the band just starting out are long gone, and O-Positive has just returned from their most extensive tour ever. Going the cheapest way possible, members of the band (as well as three crew people) roamed the country in a Winnebago. Although O-Positive did not headline their recent eleven-city, fourteen-day tour, they were exposed to large clubs, with capacities of over one thousand people. We were playing in front of maybe eight hundred to one thousand people every show. It was our job to get them into the music and to enjoy the acts following ours. But we found many people in many towns were very receptive to our music, comments Dave Ingham about the tour. The tour hit St. Louis, Kalamazoo, Ithaca, New York City, Baltimore, and Philadelphia, to name a few. When asked what they thought of opening for Sinead OConnor at Great Woods, Alan Petitti points out that, Whenever you open for a big name star, at a big venue, you find all the people you work with are professionals. Its really a great feeling to be treated that well. Alex Lob is quick to add, The food was great, too. The tour was a learning experience, as always, but it was also a self-promotional device to get people into O-Positive, which it obviously did. In this novel, Hurston writes a story about an African-American woman named Janie Crawford whose quest is to find her identity and desire as a human being to be loved and appreciated for who she is. Her quest to fulfill those desires is not easy since she has to overcome so many obstacles and challenges in her life. In conclusion, Fortunato is a gullible, full of pride, drunken mess throughout this story. In the end Fortunato gets walled up in a glitch within the vaults by Montresor. If Fortunato wasn’t such a drunk he would have lived. Finally, Fortuanto should have thought better on his decisions.

In this study, aggression was defined as the use of instrumental force (tugging on the desired toy) and bodily force (physical abuse). Throughout the entire study from 6 to 33 months, the children’s ratio of use of instrumental force to bodily force was very high, with the former being observed often. This form of aggression was often used to take another child’s toy at the simulated birthday party. In conclusion, some children naturally use aggression at a young age and some do not. Genetics of Aggression In a second study, researchers looked at the potential genetic background on the Research Domain Criteria classification’s three types of aggression in twins (Veroude et al., 2016). Based on a literature review of major accounting journals, this paper attempts to offer a comprehensive overview of recent earnings management research and provide a critical classification of articles on the matter as well as a search for voids in current literature. A selection of leading journals was reviewed systematically from January 2000 onwards resulting in 145 articles examining ‘earnings management’. Each article was thoroughly screened in terms of research question, methodology and findings. The paper attempts to be in keeping with prior review articles from around the turn of the century (Healy and Wahlen 1999; Fields, Lys and Vincent 2001) and focuses on the latest evolutions given that earnings management remained a focal research topic. The study resulted in four research categories: motives for earnings management, earnings management techniques, restrictions to earnings management, and research design issues. In every category, main research conclusions as well as methodological issues are discussed. Screening and classifying earnings management literature did not only generate a structured overview of the work performed in this area, it also provided insights in some important voids, such as a focus on non-listed and small companies, ‘real’ earnings management and non-financial motives. Finally, this paper offers a systematic literature review and evidences that there is ample room for further research. 1 1. Introduction Researchers (re)directing their focus to earnings management are confronted with an extent body of literature regarding the subject. Prior review articles such as those by Schipper (1989), Healy and Wahlen (1999) and Dechow and Skinner (2000) on earnings management and by Fields, Lys and Vincent (2001) on accounting choice have created structure in the enormous number of articles dedicated to the subject. McNichols (2000) has focused on design issues while reviewing recent literature. These prior review articles focused mainly on research done in the 1990’s. We extend this by examining the literature on earnings management in the early years of the new decade: January 2000September 2006. We selected 11 major accounting journals and screened them systematically on earnings management in title, abstract and/or author supplied keywords. As such, we read 153 articles focusing on or relating to earnings management. The articles are quite evenly spread over the entire period. This indicates that there is an continuous interest in this field of research. The articles deal with a variety of issues related to earnings management. We narrow this broad research area down into different categories to provide structure in the existing literature. This allows us to assess whether there is a shift in the research focus and to detect voids in current research. The remainder of the paper is organized as follows. In the next two sections we briefly discuss three prior review articles and our methodology (section 3). We discuss the first category (motives for earnings management) in section 4, followed by techniques of earnings management in section 5. How earnings management can be restricted is outlined in section 6. We discuss several research design issues in section 7. A summary concludes our paper. 2. Prior review articles Three important review articles from around the turn of the century serve as a basis for our research. Healy and Wahlen (1999) have reviewed earnings management literature in respect to the usefulness of prior research for standard setters. Fields, Lys and Vincent (2001), have structured their analysis around three types of market imperfections. The third review paper (McNichols, 2000) discusses the trade-offs associated with three research designs commonly used in earnings management literature. Earnings management occurs when managers use judgment in financial reporting and in structuring transactions to alter financial reports to either mislead some stakeholders about the underlying economic performance of the company or to influence contractual outcomes that depend on reported accounting numbers’ (Healy and Wahlen, 1999, p. 365). Healy and Wahlen’s often cited definition sets the tone for several papers on earn ings management. While it indicates that there are two motives and two techniques for earnings management, it leaves ample room to refine these goals and modi operandi. Healy and Wahlen came across three different motives for earnings management: capital market expectations and valuations, contracts written in terms of accounting numbers and antitrust or other government regulation. They concluded that research has not been able to assist standard setters in their attempts to restrain earnings management nor to provide evidence on the extent and scope of earnings management practices. Even though Fields et al. 2001) review accounting choice research articles, their classification is also useful for earnings management studies: ‘Although not all accounting choices involve earnings management, and the term earnings management extends beyond accounting choice, the implications of accounting choice to achieve a goal are consistent with the idea of earnings management. ’ They organized the accounting choice literature into three groups based on as many market imperfections: agency costs, information asymmetries and externalities affecting no n-contracting parties. Once again, the motives for earnings management were made apparent. Managers want to influence the outcome of contracts (e. g. compensation agreements and debt covenants), stock prices and policies of third parties (e. g. taxes, industry specific regulations). They argued that progress in the field of accounting choice 2 has slowed. They defined three fields for further research: measuring the implications of alternative accounting methods, building analytical models that provide guidance to empiricists, designing more powerful statistical techniques and improving research designs? This last issue is the main subject of the review paper by McNichols (2000). She discussed the characteristics of the three most commonly applied designs in the earnings management literature: aggregate accruals models, specific accruals models and the frequency distribution approach. One of the main arguments against using aggregate accruals models is that we do not have enough knowledge on how these accruals ‘behave’ in the absence of earnings management. That’s one of the reasons why McNichols argued that progress in earnings management research would come from specific accruals research. The frequency distributions (of different earnings metrics) approach introduced by Burgstahler and Dichev (1997) is another often used method to distinguish between companies who are thought to be managing their earnings and those companies who are probably not. This method, although quite easy to put into practice, is also being criticized. This will be addressed in section 7. 3. Methodology and contribution We selected eight major accounting journals, based on research conducted by Ballas and Theoharakis (2003). They have ranked accounting and finance journals, according to their main focus. Based on the top ten journals of their rankings, we selected the following: Accounting Horizons (AHO), Accounting, Organizations and Society (AOS), Accounting Review (TAR), Contemporary Accounting Research (CAR), Journal of Accounting, Auditing and Finance (JAAF), Journal of Accounting and Economics (JAE), Journal of Accounting and Public Policy (JAP) and Journal of Accounting Research (JAR). To make sure we conduct a worldwide screening, we also added Abacus (ABA) and European Accounting Review (EAR) to the list. We selected articles that are dedicated to or linked to earnings management by systematically screening the chosen journals on ‘earnings management’ in either title, abstract and/or author supplied keywords. This selection process resulted in a list of 145 articles. Nine out of ten journals dedicate at least 1 article to earnings management. There are no articles selected in Accounting, Organizations and Society during the entire research period. We have added Review of Accounting Studies (rather new journal but with growing importance) to our list and selected 8 papers following the same selection procedure.
